How many microfibre towels do I need to wash a car?

Why not just use two or three?

Why running lean causes damage

Three specific failure modes, all of which happen when you don’t have a clean towel to hand:

Saturation. A drying towel that’s holding all the water it can stops lifting and starts pushing. That’s when streaks and water spots appear — not because the towel is bad, but because it’s full.

Contamination carry-over. A towel that’s picked up grit holds it in the pile. Every subsequent panel gets that grit dragged across it. The two-bucket method exists to stop this happening with the wash mitt; the same logic applies to towels.

The dropped towel. A towel hits the ground and picks up sharp grit. If it’s your only clean one, the temptation to rinse it and carry on is strong. It shouldn’t be resisted through willpower — it should be resisted by having another towel.

The minimum viable kit

Drying towels: buy individually and choose carefully. One well-made 900 GSM towel genuinely outperforms three mediocre ones, and this is the towel doing the highest-risk job.
