Why Your Car Windows Fog Up Inside (and How to Stop It)
Interior fog is moisture meeting cold glass. The fast fix, why dirty glass makes it worse, and what to check when it keeps coming back.

Interior fog is simple physics: moist air touches a surface colder than it is, and the water comes out of the air. The fix follows directly from that.
The fast fix
- Turn the air conditioning on. It dehumidifies the air, which is what you want.
- Switch off recirculation. Recirculating keeps the same damp breath inside.
- Point the airflow at the glass and raise the temperature. Warm, dry air holds moisture and lifts it off the glass.
- Crack a window for a moment if it’s really bad.
Air conditioning is the part people skip, because it feels backwards in winter. It’s the most effective lever, since it removes moisture rather than merely warming it.
Where the moisture comes from
- Your own breath. A car full of people fogs fast.
- Wet clothing and umbrellas. They evaporate into a small sealed space.
- Damp carpets and mats. A quiet, constant moisture source that’s easy to overlook. See cleaning and drying floor mats.
- A blocked drain or leak. If it’s constant and there’s a musty smell, something is letting water in.
Why dirty glass fogs more
Interior glass gets a greasy film: off-gassing from plastics and vinyl, skin contact, and smoke. That film gives condensation something to grip, so the fog forms in a sheet and clears slowly.
Cleaning the inside properly helps more than people expect. Our glass cleaning guide covers the two-towel method that avoids streaks. A dedicated glass cleaner removes the film without leaving residue.
See the glass cleaner we recommendIf it keeps happening
- Check the cabin filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow, so the demister is weaker. Replacing it is usually quick.
- Check for damp carpet under the mats and in the footwell.
- Look for leaks around door seals, the windshield, and the sunroof drains.
Bottom line
Dry the air, clean the glass, find the moisture. Most persistent fogging is a damp carpet or a dirty windshield rather than a fault in the car.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my car windows fog up on the inside?
Warm, humid air inside the cabin meets glass that's colder than the air's dew point, and the moisture condenses into a film of tiny droplets. Breath, wet clothes, damp mats and a recently wet car are the usual sources of the moisture.
What is the fastest way to clear a fogged windshield?
Turn the air conditioning on, direct air at the windshield, and switch off recirculation so drier outside air is drawn in. The AC dries the air, which clears condensation faster than heat alone.
Why is the fog worse when the glass is dirty?
A film of grime gives water something to cling to and spread across. Clean glass fogs less and clears faster. Interior glass collects a hazy film from plastics and skin oils, which is why it fogs more than you'd expect.
Do anti-fog products work?
They can help on clean glass by making water form a thin sheet instead of droplets. They don't fix the underlying moisture problem, and they work best as a finishing step after a thorough clean.
